NEWS FROM MAINTENANCE

PROCEED WITH CAUTION Over the years, vegetation in the right-of-way, trees in particular, have grown in size so they presently impact the ability of our maintenance employees to shape and grade the roads and shoulders.

In the next few weeks the Township will be clearing brush and trees along township roadways. This is necessary to maintain the public right of way for safety as well as keeping the road in a condition that allows the proper maintenance year round.

Motorists entering these areas are asked to proceed with caution and provide the crew with a safe work zone.

Winter Snow Reminder Applies to Township Roads (Chisago County Press, November 3, 2011). Readers are reminded that mailboxes damaged by county crews plowing snow off a roadway are not replaced by the county. Only property damage resulting from direct contact with a plow is considered the county's responsibility. It's best to have the department-sanctioned swing arm mailbox for your property which are able to give way when snow piles up and are positioned at just the right height for postal carriers. The special posts are sold by the county for $100 and you can contact the shop at 213-8700 to call ahead and inquire about picking one up. You should always contact Gopher State (1-800-252-1166) to check for underground utilities before digging a post hole. Trash cans set out be the road for pick-up are also to be placed off the road shoulder (See graphic.) Anything in the road right-of-way such as waste cans, fences, etc. are not the county's responsibility should they be struck by a plow. County highway crews are also instructed not to assist stranded motorists with stuck vehicles. The personnel will contact law enforcement or an emergency agency whenever possible. If you have someone plow your driveway or you use a personal snowplow please remember not to plow across the roadway, which leaves spillover piles that freeze in place and cause hazards.

Spring Gravel Roads In the spring when the frost comes out of the roadbed, what was once frozen and solid turns soft and unstable. It will remain this way until the moisture comes out of the roadbed. The best cure for this is warm, dry temperatures and a good wind. If we attempt to haul gravel on top of this condition, it could turn it into a bigger mess. There is a saying in the trade that "adding a bucket of gravel to a bucket of mud just gets you a bigger bucket of mud." There is much truth to this quip, as adding sand or gravel to fill a mudhole usually has little or no effect because the gravel ends up mixing with the mud, just making more mud and sometimes aggravating the problem as equipment stirs things up. (from the Dickson County Road Commission, Iron Mountain, Michigan but just as applicable here)

Reminder: Driveway permits are required prior to any earthwork. These are obtained from the County's Zoning office and help ensure the roadbeds are kept safe and ditches well drained
